Chinese or English???

Nadine's school celebrated National Day yesterday by getting all the kids to wear either ethnic costumes or red and white. Racial harmony or national flag. We chose racial harmony, coz Nadine doesn't really like red.

Mummy was going to let Nadine wear the Vietnamese costume she wore for Chinese New Year this year. But it's too tight for her already! So we had to go get her a new dress from Chinatown. Daddy spotted this pretty dress for just $15!

Conversation between Daddy and Nadine yesterday morning
Daddy: You're wearing a Chinese costume coz you're a Chinese!
Nadine: No, I don't want! I don't want to be Chinese!
Daddy: Then what do u want to be?
Nadine: I want to be English!
Us: 8-0

But apparently, lots of kids go through this stage of denying they are Chinese, or not wanting to be Chinese, because they speak only English. At least there's assurance from Nadine's Chinese teacher that she doesn't reject the language in class.
