We had planned for quite a while, on the primary school that we should register Nadine in. Since we didn't have any affiliations to any schools, and did not do any parent-volunteer work, we decided to go for a 95%-can-get-in-school that also has pretty good reviews. Of course, it has to be near us, because we don't want her to waste time travelling. And very importantly, it has to be co-ed, so that Aaron can get direct entry.
The 2 schools nearest to us (within 1 km) are Rosyth and Xinmin. Rosyth is impossibly oversubscribed, so we were not going to plan at all. Xinmin was the obvious choice.
Then we learned that Hougang Primary (within 1-2 km) is a better school than Xinmin. And from looking at both Xinmin's and Hougang's websites and a brochure on primary schools in Hougang, Xinmin really paled in comparison. In fact, I found it boring. But Hougang has been balloting for only those within 1 km in the last 2 years. So, it was a question of whether to take the gamble or not.
As we drew closer to our registration date (Phase 2C), a 3rd option emerged - PLMGS. We had not considered it at all since it's a girls' school. But Nadine, after hearing that her good friend, Charisse has enrolled in that school, and that it's a girls' school, kept asking to go to that school too. Then we started getting people coming to tell us that it's a really good school that instills good values.
Dilemma, dilemma ....
On the last day of Phase 2C registration, we brought Nadine to Hougang, to check out the chances, as well as to hopefully get her interested in the school. But she was completely resistant. So we decided to go take a look at PL before deciding. The moment she stepped into PL, she was so super happy. And the chances seem good. We therefore registered at PL.
Lo and behold, the numbers at PL surged in the afternoon, and we ended up having to ballot for a place!
The balloting took place today. It was nerve-wrecking to the max. 22 people, including 2 pairs of twins, vying for 14 places. I kept thinking, this PL choice is totally not in our plans at all. Such a last-minute decision. Must be directed by God, and therefore, surely God will give Nadine a place. But that didn't mean I was any less nervous. Thank God Nadine's name was the 6th to be read!
So, Nadine will be attending PLMGS. I pray that it will indeed be a place that will allow Nadine to bloom and flourish, and will help her to become "a woman of fine character with a passion for life and learning".
